Problem: The world is in dire need of more sustainability measures to help reduce dependency on fossil fuels. We are at a tipping point large organizations, especially universities, need to do their part in reducing their carbon footprint and setting a standard of sustainable infrastructure

Mission: The Sol Solutions team is focused on increasing sustainability in collaboration with another UW Madison organization called Helios. We are currently working with the UW Madison Transportation Services office to install solar panels at campus area bus stops to power lighting and other fixtures. We hope to help make the UW Madison campus more sustainable in any way possible while addressing disparities in transportation use

What we’ve accomplished:

1.

Participated in solar analysis by collecting over 1,000 datapoints at over 50 bus stops on campus to inform our decision making

2.

Developed partnerships with stakeholders across campus including the Green Fund, UW Transportation Services, and Helios

3.

Delivered a final presentation and report to UW-Madison leadership outlining our recommendations for solar-powered displays and lighting

4.

Received project approval and implementation plan/timeline from UW Transportation Services. Installs are estimated to begin in spring 2023.

5.

Completed 20 solar bus stop installations summer 2023! Plans in place for roughly 20 more in the following year, and a third round of installations the year after.
